There are two kinds of decorative films that are available in the market. They are, the adhesive polyester and adhesive-free static-vinyl
The Procedure
If you are planning to install your own decorative film, the things you will need are:
- A pair of scissors
- A spray bottle
- A measuring tape
- A ruler
- A plastic card squeegee
- A few paper towels
There are a few steps that need to be followed in the installation process, they are:
1. First and foremost, it is of vital importance to clean the area to which the film is to be applied. While doing so, ensure that it is free from all traces of grease, dirt, and grime.
2. After this, measure the width and height of the glass surface keeping about ¾ inches extra material on each side of the film. Now, cut it to this size.
3. Put about 8 drops of very mild detergent into a 32 oz. spray bottle filled with water to create your own wetting solution.
4. Find a clean and flat surface to place the decorative film. When doing so remember to place it with the release liner up. Now, remove the release liner and spray the exposed adhesive surface thoroughly with the setting solution.
5. After you have applied a generous amount of the wetting solution to the glass, place the wet film onto the surface and then wet the face of the film that is to be squeezed. Now using the plastic squeegee move from the center out towards the edges to remove wetting solution and air bubbles.
6. Once you are very sure that all the bubbles have been removed, trim the excess film from the edges to the surface. To ensure a clean and continuous cut, use a razor knife and a ruler.
7. Use the clean paper towels to clean the glass surface and absorb the excess solution around the edges.
Tips and Tricks
Sometimes things aren’t as easy as written in the instructions. Here are some tips to help you make the job easier.
- Use windshield washer fluid instead of wetting solution if the weather is extremely cold.
- Remember to be patient as the film may take a few days to dry and completely stick to the glass.
- Be extra careful when removing the release linear, because if it gets stuck together it will be very difficult to pull apart.
- If you notice bubbles that you are unable to remove with the plastic squeegee then use a straight pen to pop the bubble and work the air out.
- If you are facing trouble removing the linear, you could try applying a piece of tape on the front and back of one of the corners of the film. The linear should peel away when you pull the two pieces of tape apart.
