A great method for that added source of light to a room, there is nothing quite like a skylight to brighten up a room during the day, and get a marvelous view of the stars at night. Now, they may be catching up on the popularity front recently, but truth is they've been around for a long time. Apart from being a really nice way of additional light, it also adds to the aesthetic value of a place too. There are several different variations of skylights to choose from. Some of them are, ventilating skylights, fixed skylights or curb-mounted, and tubular skylights. The best part is that if ever you feel like you're dealing with too much light, you could always go ahead with some really nice skylight window blinds, and your problem is taken care of. Apart from that mentioned above, there are also the different kinds such as pyramid skylights, and dome shaped skylights. It is essential, however, to pick the skylight well, because it isn't uncommon to make mistakes when opting for one, thus leading to a problem with the size every now and again. This decision goes haywire normally when a person decides that a bigger skylight will help with adding more light to the room. So, that was just a little bit on skylights in general. Let's take a better look at some popular varieties.

Skylight Options

Fixed Skylights
This kind of skylight acts as the most basic kind that you would find. Reason behind this is, these skylights are used for one purpose, and one purpose only, i.e., addition of extra light to a room. These are not quite the best pick if you are looking for something to contribute to the aesthetics of a room. Even though these are the most basic of all, it doesn't mean that they are limited when it comes to options to choose from. As simple as these skylights may be, they are available in quite a few different colors, styles, shapes, and sizes.

Ventilating Skylights
It would be no surprise to hear that along with the purpose of providing light, this type of skylight provides you with ventilation too, hence the name 'ventilating skylight'. Since this kind provides ample air to a room, it is one of the better options for rooms that could use the extra air. Generally rooms such as kitchens, bathrooms, etc., tend to get stuffy, so apart from the usual use of windows, these additional sources of both, light and air are an excellent way to keep a room well-lighted as also well ventilated.

Tubular Skylights
Tubular skylights seem to be the newest thing in the selection of skylights. Since this style of skylights is a compact one, it is ideal for smaller spaces such as hallways, bathrooms, utility rooms, and even closets if you wish. These skylights are normally available in the sizes of 10 inches or maybe a little over that, thus making them a sleek and convenient option even for a skylight. The best part is, as small as they are, they provide sufficient light for you to work with.

So those were the three major types that are most commonly used. In terms of shapes, the ones that most people pick from, it is either the dome shaped ones, or the pyramid shaped ones. Irrespective of which you decide to go ahead with, using a skylight will definitely help enhance the room. As a personal opinion, the dome ones offer a more elegant look, while the other option is better for a sharp contemporary look. The only thing that ever does feel like a bit of a disadvantage is the fact that when it gets too hot, there's too much heat and sunlight entering the room. But if you can find a way to work around that, do not hesitate from making the addition of a skylight to your home.
