Throw pillows add a sense of coziness and elegance to your interior decor. You can place them on the couch or chairs and change the entire appearance of the room. But this happens only when you use the right kind of pillow covers. However, most homeowners tend to buy a set of generic covers that are cheap and easy to use on a regular basis.
The reasons they state are lack of time, lack of interest or lack of money. If you want your home to have a unique look, then you will need to experiment a little and look into getting these covers for yourself. There are a few simple things that you need to do to get the best covers for your throw pillows. Read the next section to find out more.
Choosing the Covers
Think of the kind of material that you want to use for the covers--some good fabric options are wool, cotton, leather, and silk. You can choose Egyptian cotton, standard cotton, alpaca wool, lamb wool, and several other types of fabrics for rich-looking pillow covers.
After the choice of fabric is made, decide on the cover pattern that you want to look into. Decide whether you want covers with zippers or buttons. Most covers come in pop button varieties that are easy to remove.
These pillow covers are available in the size range of 12 inches to 26 inches--you will thus be required to know the exact sizes of the pillows before you purchase the covers.
Making the Covers
Measure the sides of your throw pillow in order to determine the size of the fabric that you need for making the covers. A regular square shaped throw pillow measures about 16 inches x 18 inches. Measure the size and add ¾ inches to each side of a square pillow.
Then cut the fabric by carefully marking the correct measurements. Always mark on the reverse side of the fabric and then cut out each piece. Join the pieces together with a sewing machine or by hand. You need to join only three side of the fabric pieces, so that you can place a pillow inside the cover.
If you want to add lace or any other decorative item to the cover, then do that carefully between the two right sides of the cover. Avoid using opposite sides, since it may ruin the appearance of the same. Then install the zipper to the opening side of the pillow cover. For that, fold down ¾ inches edge of the fabric and install the zippers.
Just make sure that the zipper pull is facing the inner side of the cover, since you are going to get the right side out. In case you want to add tassels, then you need to sew them on once you are done with sewing the covers. You can also do some embroidery or patchwork on the front side of the pillow cover to make it look even more decorative.
You can get designer, yet cheap throw pillows and covers at some closeouts and online discount stores. All that you need to do is to be sure of the exact size and designs that you want for your covers.
