There are even more new ways to get interesting and defined texture on the walls, like the printable and textured wall coverings.
Though, there are many techniques available, one needs to make a wise selection of the colors while applying any texture, so that the decor looks well-balanced. So, before you start any painting, a little bit of planning can help you avoid many paint disasters.

Follow these steps when creating textured walls.
  • Decide the design and type of texture you want for your walls.
  • Make a list of things you will require for the job.
  • Cover your woodwork, ceiling, trims, electrical sockets, etc., before you start cleaning the old wall.
  • Scrape off old wallpaper, or cover it with a primer, get rid of any uneven patches or surfaces. For removing any residue, spray water on the area, and remove the paint with a drywall knife.
  • On a small patch, apply the texture you have decided.
  • Stand at a distance, and check the sample, continue if you like it; or make small amends like changing the angle of the roller or sponges, or paint color to get a better effect.
  • Let the walls dry, and clean the work surface well.

Here are the various techniques, out of which you can choose the one that suits your wall. You can select any one technique, or mix and match two techniques to make your room look even more unique.

Using glazes, enhance the beauty of any color you have used. This works better if you have a partner to help you with the painting. On a base paint coated walls, one person using rollers applies glaze on the wall, while other follows up with a ragging or combing.

This is a very interesting drywall texture technique. Take a large sponge, and cut out uneven pointed shapes. Then dip the sponge in paint, and using an up and down dabbing motion create your desired textures.

Similar to sponging, you can use rags dipped in paint and create interesting patterns. You can try out different textures and materials of the rag too.

The color washing technique gives a very nice shaded look to the walls. Stick to the same color shade while using this technique. First apply glaze on the wall using a roller, and then lightly with a brush make soft bristle strokes, to blend the various shades together.

To use this interesting technique of texturing, dip a comb in paint, and then draw on the walls by holding the comb teeth on the walls, then move the comb in a wavy pattern to create spiral effect. Move the comb in a straight line, to give straight lines effect. Give a crisscross pattern, by overlapping vertical lines over diagonal comb lines.
