As far as your kitchen decor is concerned, a great way to make a statement is to install a not-so-common backsplash. A stainless steel backsplash can make your kitchen look more roomy and bright. The reason why this is becoming so popular is because it pretty much compliments and suits any kitchen style, design and theme. It also goes well with any color combination, making the kitchen look sophisticated and classy. Before you make that move to get one installed in your kitchen, however, make sure you know all the pros and cons involved and also see to it that it suits your taste.

Material

Stainless steel is considered to be the most durable material. This material is obtained by adding chromium to the low-carbon steel. This gives the steel its shine and durability. Generally 14 or 16 gauge steel is used for household purposes. However, in case the shine has reduced, one can use polish that is available in the following forms:
  • Form of putty
  • Liquid Polish
  • Aerosol
  • Sprays
These are readily available and can be used to restore the shine.

Designs

There are several designs you can choose from. Gone are the days when steel backsplash was only used in restaurant kitchens, as they are no longer just smooth sheets of stainless steel. These days this type of backsplashes come in a wide array of patterns and finishes. While you are selecting the backsplash for your kitchen, consider the theme of your kitchen. The most popular designs that are available are traditional mosaic tile designs, swirls, finishes, etc.

Installation

Installing the backsplash can be a herculean task. However, by following the steps given below, you can install one for yourself. Before starting the installation procedure, cover the front end of the steel sheet or the tiles with a newspaper to avoid any strain marks on it. The best tool to cut steel is a diamond wet saw. There are two different methods of installation depending on the design that you opt for.

# Uncut Sheet

This type of design uses a complete sheet of steel. The entire sheet is cut according to the backsplash measurements and installed. The advantage of this design is that there are no gaps. This almost zeros the chances of cracking of the backsplash.

Tools Needed:
  • Measuring Tape
  • Marker pen
  • Filler Compound
  • Cutter
  • Sandpaper
  • Construction Adhesive
  • Cleaning spray
  • Putty Knife
  • Caulking Gun
Procedure:
  1. Clean the wall where the backsplash is to be installed. If there are some holes or low-spots on the wall, fill them by using a filler compound. However, if there are some humps, you can smoothen them by peeling them off using a sandpaper or any sharp object. The backsplash tends to crack if the wall is not even.
  2. Next, measure the area in both vertical as well as horizontal directions using the measuring tape.
  3. Using a marker, make the necessary measurement markings on the sheet.
  4. Cut the piece of steel that you have as per the measurements.
  5. Use the construction adhesive and apply it evenly on the rear side of the steel sheet. Using the caulking gun and the putty knife will help to spread the adhesive evenly without any air bubbles.
  6. Place and hold the sheet on the wall till it is properly fixed.
  7. Once done, immediately clean the sheet to remove any stain marks using the cleaning sprays like alcohol spirit, etc.
# Tiles

The traditional tiles can be arranged in various patterns to get different designs. In case of any damage, only the damaged tile can be replaced; thus reducing time and effort.

Tools Needed:
  • Filler Compound
  • Cutter
  • Sandpaper
  • Construction Adhesive
  • Cleaning spray
  • Putty Knife
  • Caulking Gun
  • Adhesive tape
  • Cardboard
Procedure:
  1. Clean the wall where the backsplash is to be installed. To remove humps use a sandpaper. In case of any low spots, use filler compound and fill the gaps till they are even.
  2. After the wall is cleaned, arrange the tiles in such a manner that there are no gaps left, using an adhesive tape.
  3. Once the positions are fixed, the adhesive tape can be removed. Start from one of the corners and place tiles at the pre-fixed positions. You can use the putty knife and the caulking gun to spread the adhesive on the tiles. You can use a cardboard to give the necessary support. Use the adhesive in minimal quantities.
  4. Keep on placing the tiles one after the other in the horizontal position.
  5. In case there are any outlets on the wall, you can cut the tile by taking proper measurements. Remember to disconnect any electrical connections while installing the tiles.
  6. In case there are spaces left in between the tiles, you can fill them by using caulk.
  7. Clean the tiles using the alcohol spirit.

Cost

Yes, modernity, style and convenience come with a price, so does this backsplash. Depending on your choice, you can be paying anything from $20 to $200 per square foot. Stainless steel sheets are costlier than the rest of the backsplash materials that are available. Also, stainless steel backsplash should be installed with care and expertise.

Care and Cleaning

For cleaning, all you have to do is use warm water and soap and clean using a soft cloth. Wipe with a dry cloth to avoid water stains. You can also use the alcohol spirit based sprays that are available in the market for cleaning. You need to take care while using citric acids, tomatoes, bleaches and chlorides as these will leave unsightly stains on your stainless steel backsplash. If you want to protect it from stains, consider using a sealer.

Pros

Stainless steel has many advantages over the other backsplash materials. They are as follows:
  • This backsplash will keep the wall on which it is installed, dry. This is because, steel is non-porous in nature.
  • It is heat resistant, ensuring there will be no damage to the backsplash when you are working on high flame.
  • The material is extremely durable. Once installed, there won't be any need to replace it unless there is some major damage.
  • Cleaning of such backsplash is very easy.
  • Also, it is rust-resistant making it the most appropriate material to be used for a backsplash.
  • Stainless steel backsplashes made from a single sheet, reduce the risk of cracking.
  • Steel also does not need polishing, unlike the other materials.
Cons

Apart from the above mentioned pros, this type of material also has a few disadvantages. They are:
  • Cost is the major drawback of this type of backsplash. It is the costliest material.
  • Acidic foods can prove harmful to the steel. They leave stains that can spoil the appearance of the backsplash.
  • Scratches are easily visible on this surface.
  • If the steel is spoiled, then in case of uncut sheet, the entire sheet has to be changed.
With so many interesting options available to the homeowner, this backsplash is truly versatile. You can experiment using stainless steel tiles with marble and glass. So whether you are looking towards redoing your kitchen, or designing a brand new kitchen, stainless steel backsplash is a great way to get a combination of durability, convenience and style.
