Roof is a very important part of any construction. Hence, the material used for roofing should be durable and the installation process of the roof also should be simple.
The types of materials used for roofing are available in market in wide variety. There are few aspects that need to be cosidered while finalising the type of roofing material. Along with the material's durability, the locale should be taken into consideration since the climatic conditions of the locale have different effects on different matrials.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles roofing materials can be used for historic as well as contemporary types of buildings. Available in many colors; they are of two types: Organic and Fiberglass.
Asphalt shingles available for roofing range from the architectural roof shingles (sometimes called 'Dimensional shingles' or 'Laminate shingles') to the low cost shingles. They are fire resistant, considerably easy to repair and inexpensive; but, are extremely susceptible to molds and mildew and can last for a very few years (around 15-30 years).


Different metals like aluminum, steel, and copper are used for construction. These are available in many colors and used in roofing bungalows and cottages. Though they are made of metal, they are light weight and extremely environment friendly.
Metal roofing is durable and has a long life of about 50 years. There are only two major drawbacks of using these. The first is that they are difficult to install and require periodic painting, and the second is that they are quite expensive.


Wooden roofing gives a classic look to cottages and bungalows. Wood is a material that can be used in the contemporary style of construction, as well as in the historic ones.
Wooden shingles are easy to install and repair. They are long-lasting if they are maintained well. The demerits are its cost and professional installation. Wooden shingles are more prone to rotting, molds, and mildew.


Slate is well-known for long-lasting and durable nature. Slate roofs are extremely heavyweight and expensive for installation. Although they have a high cost, they last for a lifetime.


Tile roofs are available in a variety of colors and styles. They are attractive, yet durable, however, durability comes with the cost of high and regular maintenance. They are heavy yet fragile, and walking on this type of roofs can break the tiles.

Engineered Materials

The engineered roofing materials are lightweight and long-lasting. They are attractive (available in different colors) and cost-effective. The only drawback is that they are not known to everybody.


Concrete roofing is available in different shapes and colors and is extremely durable. It requires low maintenance and are relatively lightweight. It can be expensive as compared to other roofing types.
