Particle boards are made of sawdust and other waste wood pieces. The saw dust and waste wood is blended with a special resin to form a suspension. This suspension along with glue is pressed to form long sheets using a machine.
The long sheets so formed, are called particle boards which are used for making cabinets and other furniture objects. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of this material.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Particle board wood
While you consider a plywood vs. particle board cabinet, the first thing you will notice is the quality. Plywood is definitely a better option, because it is durable and sturdy, as compared to particle board.

The biggest disadvantage of is that it cannot handle exposure to moisture, thus not making it a very good choice for outdoor furniture or even for use in bathrooms and kitchens.
But, why do people still go in for this material when it has so many drawbacks? Because, most people use this only on a temporary basis. Those staying in rented homes, or even college students on a budget, prefer temporary furniture which is easy to install and remove. Cabinets made of particle wood are much cheaper compared to those made of solid wood.
Refinishing the Cabinets
New Home Interior
Well, if you already have storage cabinets or planning to install those made of particle board then here are tips on refinishing them. You can use these tips to spruce up their appearance when their surface gets dull and damaged after a few years.
Start by sanding the piece thoroughly using a 220-grit sandpaper. Remove the dust collected over the surface by using a rough cloth. Next thing to do is to start painting them, by first application of a coat of shellac (varnish) over the surface using a flat wide brush.
paint
Use paints that are suitable for painting over wooden furniture, and apply it in even strokes using a flat brush or a roller. Choose a color that goes well with the rest of your interiors. Lastly, once the paint dries up, apply a coat of clear varnish, so that your cabinets look fresh for longer.
Even though these cabinets do not last long, they are convenient. They can be easily moved from one house to another, and if looked after well they can last as long as 3-4 years.
