Sliding doors make any room look attractive. They are often installed to connect the room to an adjoining patio or a solarium. Sliding doors not only add character to the room, but also are great in the way they let the natural light in and create an atmosphere of warmth in the room. However, problems may arise if the sliding doors are not insulated properly. This can cause heat loss and lead to wasteful expenditure on electricity bills to increase the temperature of the room during the winter season. So, the solution? Insulate the sliding doors with curtains.
Insulated Curtain Ideas for Glass Doors
One for Every Season...
If the sliding doors are letting in more light and warmth than what is required during the summer months, then it is time you use insulated curtains. This will keep the excess heat in check and make the room cool and comfortable. Similarly, if during the winter months, there is heat loss from the sliding doors, then to avoid this, you need a pair of insulated curtains too. A good idea here would be to invest in two pairs of curtains, one for the summers and another one for the winters and change it according to the season. This will help in maintaining the right weather in your house as well as you get to change the look of the room, every few months!
Styles and Colors...
Today, as people have become so environment conscious, insulated curtains are a very popular trend. This means that you have a wide variety in terms of designs and styles of blackout curtains to choose from. Such curtains are available in fabrics like cotton and polyester or a mix, with a thermal lining at the back. Light green, camel, brown, these are the most popular shades. A cheaper, homemade alternative is to make your own insulated curtains by hanging a large blanket from the curtain rod, over the sliding doors!
Blinds and Shades...
If you have a higher budget, go in for the cellular blinds. The cells in the blinds are able to hold the air and are thus, much more energy efficient than the fabric curtains. These days, numerous varieties in blinds are available, the ones that can be opened vertically and those that can be opened on the side. The blackout style of blinds is the best as it offers complete privacy as well. In terms of looks too, many attractive colors are available and you can choose the one which matches your room décor. Roman shades are another option that you have for insulating the sliding door.
The Installation...
Once you have chosen the curtain that you want to hang on the sliding door, there are some things that you should keep in mind, before installing them. Firstly, keep the curtain rod above the door so that the curtain covers the entire glass and it does not pose a hindrance when people use the door. Secondly, use big grommets so that the curtains can slide and hang nicely!
Something More...
Besides hanging curtains or blinds, one more thing that you should do, to insulate the doors is to keep the door track absolutely clean. Sometimes what happens is that dirt and debris get lodged in there, preventing the door from closing properly. Thus, along with hanging the insulated curtains, clean the door track too. Another thing that you can do is to caulk the edges of the sliding glass door. This will further add on to the insulation of the room.
Insulated curtains have many uses, such as they maintain privacy and the right weather in the room, besides enhancing the room décor. In the long run, you will be saving a good amount of dollars on your electricity bills too! This makes insulated curtains a must have for your sliding doors.
