Flat and shallow roofing systems ruled the industry for about 100 years and now the contractors needed a change. A system that was something new, durable as well as cheap became the king of the roofing industry and popularized in a fortnight.
People were waiting for a low-cost material to protect their homes from weather attacks and they soon got what they wanted. But, a proper installation is necessary to get maximum benefit of rubber roofing. Reading on will help you understand the process for installation of rubber roofing.
In a shingled roofing system there are different layers of rubber shingles like other roofing shingles to protect the house from harmful weather elements. The installation requires basic workshop tools, your time and a few instructions. Let us begin to learn the installation process with the materials required and steps listed ahead:
For Whole Rubber Roofing
- Rolls of EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene M-class) Rubber roofing
- Rubber roofing adhesive
It is necessary to remove all the old shingles before installing the new rubber roofing system. Loosen them with a shovel and take them off using a claw-hammer.
Look for any loose roof boards and re-attach them. Also the gaps that are wider than a quarter-inch should be covered with wooden strips. Make sure that all the preexisting nails and the remnants of the previous roofing surface are removed properly. You can use a workshop broom to sweep off the remains and clean the roof surface.
Start rolling out the EPDM rubber roofing membrane from one side of the roof through the center up to the other side. Let it lie there for 25 to 30 minutes.
Now, fold the rubber roof membrane into half and sweep the visible half part of the deck (roof board) as well as the upper part of the folded rubber membrane.
In this step, you will apply the special rubber roofing adhesive. Take a roller and apply the adhesive on to both the deck as well as the folded roof membrane.
Slowly and gradually unfold the roof membrane until it reaches its original position. To ensure the strong bond of the adhesive take a push broom and press the roof membrane down against the deck with force.
Repeat the last three steps for the other half of the roof. Once the rubber roof takes its position, sweep the entire deck with the broom to do final fixing of the roof membrane.
For Shingled Rubber Roofing
- Nail gun
- Tar paper
- Push broom
- Electric staple gun
- Razor knife
Clear off the roof by removing all the remains of previous shingles and tar paper. Sweep the deck and make it clean for the next installation.
Roll out the tar paper to cover the roof board by stapling it to the roof surface with an electric staple gun at regular intervals. Cut off the excess tar paper at the edges of the roof with the razor knife.
Lay the first row of shingles in their position along one edge of the roof using a nail gun.
Now, lay the second row of shingles so they can overlap the first one at its end. Remember that you will begin from the bottom corner of the roof and reach the ridge. The method of placing the rows of shingles will be in the upward direction.
Repeat the process of laying rows until you reach the ridge and continue to the next section of the roof.
These are the two methods of rubber roofing your house out of which you can choose any one according to your convenience. Please bear in mind that this task is not for a new person in roofing. You should have prior knowledge about it. It will give you success in your task and also the installation will be perfect.
