Even though a cabinet sounds to be a very traditional idea, you can make it as modern and stylish as you want with various designs.   • The first step is to measure the dimensions of the TV and record them for further use. Nowadays, most people prefer to have TVs ranging from 27 to 46 inches. After you measure the TV dimensions, make sure you add at least 5 inches extra in order to fit the TV with ample space around it. You can design the cabinet in such a way, that the TV can be placed either inside the cabinet or over it.
  • Now, you will need to estimate the size of the entire cabinet, that includes the TV slot along with additional drawers, shelves, extensions, etc. Therefore, after you have designed the cabinet, make sure it fits in the desired area of the room and take the measurements accordingly. You will have to estimate the measures of each and every wood piece you will be installing in the cabinet.
  • The next thing to do is purchase the lumber and other materials that are required for building a TV cabinet. You can buy any type of lumber from a lumberyard as they will give you choices with respect to the color, durability, strength and finish of the wood. Also purchase paint or wood polish in order to coat the finished product.
  • Then comes the cutting part, where you will have to cut the lumber according to the measurements you have taken. Keeping the design and its requirements in mind, cut and sand each piece carefully, with a saw and sander and make sure you add slots or circles for the wires to pass. You can also try carving on the door pieces if you want to add patterns. Prepare all the pieces of wood such as; legs, base and top of the cabinet, sides, doors, drawers and shelves, etc., so that all you have to do is attach them.
  • The attaching and assembling of the wood pieces will take time, as you have to drill holes in them, attach the pieces with screws and nails. You can attach the doors to the main cabinet with the brass hinges and fix the legs as well. You can then attach the doorknobs, install the glass (optional), handles for the drawers, etc., if desired.
  • After you have built the cabinet, you can paint and finish it appropriately. The wood surface is already sanded, thus all you have to do is paint it in any desired manner. You can simply polish or varnish it with enamel if you want to keep the wood color.
